Member’s Sit-Rep: Vagabonds ’07

Member’s Sit-Rep: Vagabonds ’07
Vol: 66 Issue: 24 Saturday, March 24, 2007

We woke up this morning to the sound of air brakes being released in what seemed to be our bedroom. It took a second to realize we spent the night in a Walmart parking lot.

We don’t usually overnight park at Walmart, but most RV camps don’t open this early this far north, so it was either Walmart or drive all night.

Walmart has made it a more or less corporate policy to permit RV’s to park overnight in their parking lots. The parking lots are well-lit and regularly patrolled. And the store is open 24 hours. But it’s noisy.

(I almost fell out of bed when the truck parked beside me released his air brakes.)

Sigh. On the road again.

We don’t officially become vagabonds until mid-April when the lease runs out on our seasonal rental.

We’ve spent the winter fixing and preparing and adapting this ol’ bus for the upcoming Road Tour.

Now it’s time for my doctor to give me his annual ‘State of My Liver’ speech and discuss plans for his next ‘State of My Colon’ address.

(Sigh. Getting old isn’t for sissies)

It took six months to get this appointment, [thanks to Canada’s socialized medicine] and I’ve no way of predicting what kind of followup exams may be necessary, so we don’t know how long we’ll be in the Great White North.

And there is still some junk I wasn’t able to force myself to get rid of when we sold our house last year that needs to be dealt with. That could take a bit of time.

So we packed up the bus for an extended trip, and in the process, realized we had effectively moved out of our little beach cottage. It looks pretty much the way we found it.

The Road Tour doesn’t officially kick off until May 6th in Houston, but to all intents and purposes, we are already homeless itinerant vagabonds.

I am typing this with Gayle’s laptop sitting on my knees as Gayle bounces us along the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

(Have you ever noticed that the WORST roads in the US interstate system are the TOLL roads?)

We expect to get to Mike and Kari’s sometime this afternoon, where we’ll set up camp in their driveway for the duration of this trip. I am really looking forward to the visit (if not the reason for it).

I realized how much I am looking forward to the Road Tour this year, as well. Nicole has done a magnificent job of organizing dates to places, proving that I learned my lesson from last year.

(When you don’t know what you are doing, ask Someone Who does. I asked, and He sent me Nic. )

Between Nic’s organizational skills and Renea handling mail and administration, things are coming together nicely. Now the only thing left to do is to see what condition my condition is in.

Our God is a prayer-answering God. Please pray with me for a good report.

Next stop, the Great White North.
