America’s ‘Masada Complex’
Vol: 52 Issue: 23 Monday, January 23, 2006
One of the most not-so-secret secret military contingency plans on earth is that of Israel in response to an outside nuclear attack. It’s called the ‘Samson Option’.
Samson was one of Israel’s judges to whom God had granted superhuman strength, provided he kept his vows as a Nazarene, which included sobriety, chastity and not cutting his hair.
The story of Samson and Delilah is among the most well-known in the Bible. Samson violated his vow, Delilah tricked him into cutting his hair, and Samson was captured by the Philistines.
Samson was blinded and he was chained between two massive pillars. He prayed for the strength to bring down the pillars, killing himself along with his enemies.
“And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein.” (Judges 16:30)
Hence, the ‘Samson Option’ is not just a codename for Israel’s nuclear response strategy. It is a warning.
It is intended to convey Israel’s determination to take its enemies with it, should they attempt the nuclear destruction of the Jewish state.
Israel has enough nuclear weapons to turn the Middle East into a radioactive sea of glass, and it wants to leave no doubt as to its willingness to use them.
In essence, the Samson Option is a code word for a policy that calls for national suicide rather than accepting the possibility of defeat.
The ‘Samson Option’ is often characterized as being part of Israel’s overall ‘Masada Complex.’
The ‘Masada Complex’ refers to another seminal moment in Jewish history, when some three hundred Jewish rebels held off the legions of Rome in a siege that dragged on for three years.
The rebels had fled to Herod’s southern palace on Masada, a finger of rock jutting 1300 feet straight up from the desert floor.
The Romans eventually constructed a ramp and breached the Jewish defenses. The defending Jews chose to commit suicide rather than submitting to capture. They burned the complex, but left one storehouse full of food intact.
They wanted the Romans to know that they had plenty of food and water to demonstrate their suicide was an act of defiance rather than one of desperation.
The liberal left seems to have adopted the Masada Complex as part of its political strategy and is evidently unafraid to embrace the Samson Option to the degree necessary to accomplish its agenda.
All the usual suspects came out over the weekend after Al Gore’s unhinged speech slamming the US government as a ‘grave danger’ to world peace.
Gore told his audience, As we begin this new year, the executive branch of our government has been caught eavesdropping on huge numbers of American citizens . . . without regard to the established law enacted by Congress precisely to prevent such abuses. . . etc., blah, blah.”
The NSA doesn’t eavesdrop on ‘huge numbers’ of American citizens. It eavesdrops on EVERYBODY. Every phone call is intercepted electronically, but only those that use certain trigger words get further scrutiny.
During the “what did the president know and when did he know it?” campaign, the left was screaming because the NSA didn’t have enough people analyzing eavesdrops.
Now, according to Gore, the US government was ‘caught’ eavesdropping! If what Gore s really trying to say is that the American people have learned of the fact that the NSA, under orders from the Commander in Chief, has been carrying out a top secret anti-terror snooping program, he s absolutely right.
(That’s what Congress authorized when it gave the president the authority to fight the war on terror.)
Gore also attacked the government’s war detainee policies, claiming, the president has also declared that he has a heretofore unrecognized inherent power to seize and imprison any American citizen that he alone determines to be a threat to our nation, adding that No such right exists in the America that you and I know and love. It is foreign to our Constitution.
As noted earlier, Gore has either become completely unhinged or is woefully ignorant of US history. FDR imprisoned tens of thousands of Japanese-Americans in internment camps during WWII. Nobody considered his impeachment.
He can’t be ignorant of the fact that the Clinton-Gore administration defended the use of warrant less searches (including physical searches) as vigorously as it defended its right to invade Yugoslavia in defiance of both the UN and the US Congress.
That only leaves the conclusion that Al Gore is so blinded by his personal Masada Complex that he’s lost his mind.
The problem is, Gore’s Masada Complex is shared by most of his Democratic co-religionists. (It has become a Democratic article of faith that one can tear down one’s government without damaging one’s country.)
John Kerry made the talk shows to defend Gore’s screed from criticism, said on ABC’s “This Week” that, “What he’s (Rove) trying to pretend is somehow Democrats don’t want to eavesdrop appropriately to protect the country. That’s a lie,” Kerry said.
“We’re prepared to eavesdrop wherever and whenever necessary in order to make America safer,” said the Man Who Was Almost President about the Other Man Who Was Almost President’s claim that such eavesdropping is an impeachable offense.
Evidently, the Masada Complex can not only unhinge politicians, it deafens journalists. (Nobody questioned Kerry’s criticism of the administration by saying the Democrats were prepared to do exactly the same thing.)
Just as nobody connected the dots when Osama bin-Laden made all the same points– in the same order — as the DNC’s anti-Bush ‘talking points’ memos.
Following this line of reasoning, offering aid and comfort to the enemy is not an impeachable offense, whereas making war against him just might be.
Israel’s ‘Samson Option’ is a logical extension of the ‘Masada Complex’. When one is prepared to consider national suicide as a political option, the ‘Samson Option’ of pulling the house down on yourself to kill your enemies if necessary doesn’t sound that extreme.
The Left is fond of quoting Ben Franklin; “They who give up a little essential liberty in exchange for some temporary security deserve neither liberty nor security.”
Allowing the NSA to intercept terrorist communications makes no demands on America’s essential liberties. And defeating al-Qaeda hardly qualifies as ‘temporary’ security.
The Al Gore wing of American politics has already embraced the Samson Option. No price is too high to pay if it will bring down the administration, even if it means blinding the NSA and re-imposing the same restrictions on intelligence gathering that they blamed for al-Qaeda’s success on September 11.
One of the most perplexing Bible prophecy questions of this present age revolves around America’s role during the Tribulation Period. The Bible divides the world politically in the last days into four spheres of global influence; Gog-Magog, revived Rome, the Kings of the East (China, etc.) and the Kings of the South (Islamic Africa).
There is no mention of any fifth global power resembling America. As the Left’s Masada Complex grows ever more delusional, a political Samson Option looms large as one possible reason for her absence.
